Microsoft CEO: AI now writes up to 30% of company’s code

During a fireside chat at Meta’s LlamaCon conference on Tuesday, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed that between 20% and 30% of the code in the company’s repositories was generated by AI. This discussion took place alongside Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Nadella provided the figure in response to Zuckerberg’s inquiry about the proportion of Microsoft’s code that AI currently generates. The CEO of Microsoft reported that the company is experiencing varied outcomes in AI-generated code across various programming languages, noting significant advancements in Python while observing slower progress in C++.

In a bold prediction, Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott has stated that by the year 2030, he anticipates that a staggering 95% of all code will be generated by artificial intelligence.

In a recent exchange, when Satya Nadella questioned Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta admitted uncertainty regarding the extent to which AI is contributing to the generation of the company’s code.

During an earnings call last week, Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed that artificial intelligence generates over 30% of the company’s code. However, it remains uncertain how Microsoft and Google are quantifying the distinction between AI-generated content and non-AI content, suggesting that these figures should be approached with caution.
